The Hawaiian monarchy is overthrown with United States involvement
Hawaiʻi
A group opposing Queen Liliʻuokalani overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy after U.S. troops landed in Honolulu. The Cleveland administration’s subsequent investigation faulted the U.S. minister’s support for the overthrow.
Dates preserve the source’s precision. This entry is part of a selected historical record; its qualifications and sources are retained below.
Context / qualification
This dates the overthrow, not U.S. annexation in 1898. The cited diplomatic account records the Cleveland administration’s findings; a change imposed on the kingdom did not establish Native Hawaiian consent.
